Three DPS Magnet Schools Take National Honors
The School for Creative Studies, Morehead Montessori Elementary and Lakewood Montessori Middle School were all recently recognized by the Magnet Schools of America for 2017. The School for Creative Studies and Morehead Montessori both earned the prestigious “Magnet School of Excellence” designation and Lakewood Montessori Middle was deemed a “Magnet School of Distinction.” “Magnet School of Excellence” is the highest category of award bestowed by the national organization.
“Only a select group of magnet schools across the country earn this recognition,” said superintendent Bert L’Homme. “We are all so proud of Ms. Price and the School for Creative Studies team, Ms. Webb and the Morehead Montessori team, and Dr. Carmon and the Lakewood Montessori team. All of the teachers and staff at these schools work long hours and do great work for their students. I appreciate what they do every day for children in Durham.”
The School for Creative Studies focuses on developing students into observant, resourceful, and adaptable problem solvers using applied creativity, media, design, and communication arts. Morehead Montessori Elementary uses the Montessori model to promote the academic, social, emotional, and physical growth of all students by helping them become independent and self-directed in their learning. Lakewood Montessori Middle School encourages students to become independent thinkers, engaged learners and positive contributors to our society by showing responsibility for each other and the world around them. It is a community where adolescents grow academically and socially through the mastery of real life skills and knowledge.
“Being a young school and receiving this designation helps to put a spotlight on our magnet program. It validates the good work of our staff and students,” said School for Creative Studies principal Renee Price. “This award is based on being able to provide equity and diversity in innovative learning environments and evaluates a holistic articulation of a theme, growth, academic achievement, climate, community partnerships, and parent involvement.”
The schools will receive their awards at MSA’s national conference in Los Angeles, Cal., at the end of April.
MSA’s Magnet Schools of Merit Award program recognizes magnet schools that demonstrate an ability to raise student academic achievement, promote racial and socioeconomic diversity, provide integrated curricula and instruction, and create strong family and community partnerships that enhance the school’s magnet theme.
